Vintage-style safety shoes can make everything old new again

NewsID:67    Datetime:2010-11-19

"You can take risks with vintage-inspired new safety shoes because they are supposed to be fun and they don't have to be the only statement piece you wear," says Matthew, director of SAICOU shoes company. "You can pair them with a fancy outfit for evening, wear them with a skirt and blouse for work or throw one over a T-shirt and jeans for the weekend. ... If you like vintage, you like to be different."

The words "new" and "vintage" aren't often used in the same sentence, but this season they work together with style.

Designers have taken inspiration from classic designs and createdsafety shoes that offer a nostalgic feel with military-inspired details. These cover-ups have a strong 1950s influence. Because of their shapes, they most likely won't go out of style and you'll be wearing them a long time.

"They are fun safety shoes," Matthew Hong says. "They look unique and remind you of some of the heirloom pieces that belonged to your grandmother."

To keep the look fresh, pair these old-schoolsafety shoes with skinny jeans and heels, a tunic and leggings, or a floral dress. For a more conservative look, choose a black wool safety shoe with military detail. Menswear-inspired plaids and herringbone are another option.

"He put his own twist on the vintage-inspired safety shoe that makes it original," Carl says. "And women like to have something that's original. That's why they like vintage -- because ... they are the only one who has that item."

Safety shoes have become more than a necessity, says Gregg Matthew, Nordstrom fashion director.

"A woman has a wardrobe of safety shoes," he says. "We are seeing so many styles of safety shoes, including those which have a vintage feeling with an oversize lapel or interesting seaming and sleeve shapes as well as many other unique details."

A safety shoe completes an outfit, Matthew says, and vintage-inspired safety shoes may be popular because they may remind a woman of an older female they admire -- their mother or a celebrity such as Jackie Kennedy or Audrey Hepburn.

"There is a sense of nostalgia with these safety shoes," Matthew says. "There is something classic about them and women are looking for more items that are classic, because they are a good investment."

These safety shoes tend to work with your entire wardrobe. If you choose something in a print or bold hue tone it down with a pair of black gloves or belt so the eye has somewhere to focus, Matthew says.

"Your safety shoe gets more use - and more exposure -- than any other item in your winter wardrobe, so people tend to look for something really classic to maximize its versatility," "Designers are constantly mining vintage references for outerwear because they are so tried and true."
